Turmeric has been used for centuries as a spice to enlighten the flavor of dishes and is extremely popular for this in India, but it has also been used for many years in Ayurveda and Eastern Medicine for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activity. This medicinal plant is extensively used in Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha medicine as home remedy for various diseases and symptoms. While some herbal supplements can have adverse effects there are no known interactions between turmeric and other medicines. It is all natural and is safe to consume at large doses, although any medical professional would avoid recommending that, you can rest assured knowing it cannot create dependency (addiction) or overdose.
DO KEEP IN MIND: Turmeric is fat-soluble, meaning you have to consume it with fats in order for it to be absorbed by the body. In Ayurveda it is typically mixed with ghee or milk, but also consider avocados, fish, cheese, eggs, fish, olive oil and any food high in healthy fats. Stay away from animal fats (lard, bacon, etc).
Safety evaluation studies indicate that both turmeric and curcumin are well tolerated at a very high dose without any toxic effects. Any wise person knows moderation is best.
In a 1985 study in India turmeric was shown to reduce the cell growth of Dalton’s lymphoma cells in hamsters. The key ingredient in turmeric that assists in this is “curcumin.”
