Thanksgiving is tomorrow and so I thought I’d talk about heartburn; something many of you will be expecting and bracing to suffer through so you can enjoy your favorite foods. Everyone stocks up on Tums and other antacid type medications just incase they have a heartburn flare up. I wanted to share what I learned in regards to steps you can take to avoid it before it even starts, and healthy but EFFECTIVE ways to keep it at bay.

Antacids will help relieve symptoms right when they are happening… USUALLY (not always) and people lean on them for giant meals like thanksgiving. Persistent heartburn is hard on the body and if not taken care of will cause permanent damage to multiple organs in the body including your teeth.

Can it send someone to the hospital or emergency services?

If the person suffering from heartburn is vomiting black or bloody looking material, experiencing chest pain that radiates into the back, difficulty swallowing, short of breath, or passing tar-like stools they must see a physician or seek the advice of emergency services IMMEDIATELY. These can be signs of an obstruction in the esophagus, ulcers, or a heart attack.

What causes heartburn to happen?

When there happens to be too much pressure on the stomach or the hiatal sphincter muscle it doesn’t completely close causing stomach acids and other material to rise up the esophagus.

The most common cause for this action is fatty, spicy, rich, fried, or acidic foods, excessive use of aspirin or ibuprofen, obesity, caffeine, smoking, pregnancy, heart problems, and various prescription drugs can cause heartburn to persist.

If you suffer from both chronic constipation and chronic heartburn they are typically related. The pressure and pushing on the abdominal muscles when trying to use the restroom can cause stomach material to rise up causing heartburn.

There is another possible reason called esophagitis; when a portion of the esophagus doesn’t completely close off from the stomach contents.

For some people laying down or sitting in particular positions will cause heartburn because of the way the stomach and esophagus are positioned in the body.

The Untold True History of Thanksgiving (with some inappropriate commentary)

Thanksgiving is an American tradition that we currently relate to football, turkey, stuffing, Macy’s Parade, and relaxing before attending the local Black Friday sales. How Thanksgiving truly started is rarely discussed openly in modern America and most of us have fallen prey to the belief that buying more will bring us happiness and ensure a happy Holiday season.

Thanksgiving has a rough history and unfortunately many people have paid their lives so that we get the opportunity to surrender to gluttony and greed. While I’m not condemning anyone for living their yearly tradition in that way, I’d like to bring a small bit of attention to the true origins of “Thanksgiving.”

Understanding the truth has enhanced my gratitude for the experiences I get to have as a modern American on Thanksgiving.

FACT ONE: We typically remember the meal Pilgrims shared with the Wampanoag Native Tribe in the fall of 1621 as the FIRST meal shared between Natives and travelers from other lands. The first recorded meal between a foreign & distant traveler and Natives of North America was actually on May 23, 1541. The Teya Indians, from what is now called Texas, and Francisco Vásquez de Coronado came together to have a feast and celebrate the success of finding food while on expedition. There is a group of people in America to this day that consider this the true Thanksgiving.

FACT TWO: It’s a fact that on December 11, 1620 the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. There is this mythical idea that when they landed they immediately became friends with the Natives, the Natives made room for the Pilgrims, and everyone went on their happy way. The truth is the Pilgrims first winter was extremely hard on them; their population quickly dropped from 102 to 56. They weren’t prepared for what they encountered AT ALL.

FACT THREE: Months later, after the Pilgrims landed, in the Fall of 1621 and after receiving help from the Wampanoag tribe, the Pilgrims and 91 Natives joined together in a feast. The feast was to celebrate their FIRST successful harvest since landing and lasted a whopping THREE DAYS LONG.

FACT FOUR: In 1623 the Pilgrims and Natives unite for another feast after a devastating drought ends with heavy rain. Over fifty years later, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, the governing council decided to hold a meeting and discuss how to express thanks for all the good things happening since they’ve arrived (including the death of Natives; I’ll get to that in a minute). They officially decided that June 29th would be celebrated as Thanksgiving every year moving forward.

FACT FIVE: When many of the Pilgrims arrived they distributed Small Pox to the Natives and killed over 90% of their local-tribal population. Since the Natives were never exposed to this disease prior to their arrival they lacked the antibodies required to survive the symptoms. Despite the Pilgrims sharing this disease, that killed a large amount of the Wampanoag population, and the fact that the only reason the Pilgrims didn’t all die their first winter was because of their help, the Pilgrims continued to invite more people to the New Land and provided no options or help to the Natives, who were suffering due to their arrival.

FACT SIX: Despite the gathering and sharing a feast between the Natives and the Pilgrims, there is no true evidence that they truly got along. They found themselves in a situation where they desperately needed one another to survive, at least for a short period of time anyways; the Pilgrims had no idea how to work the land, and the Natives had no idea how to cure this disease that was given to them. The Pilgrims held the Natives in contempt because they believed they were uncivilized and satanic heathens. Can you imagine how you would feel is some stranger with better weapons than you showed up at your home, decided to live there, AND judge you for being who you’ve been your whole life, while trying to provide THEM with a meal because they are dying?

FACT SEVEN: In school (IF you’re still in school), when you discuss Thanksgiving, you should ask about Mystic Connecticut. In Mystic, the Pequot Natives were celebrating a green corn festival for their good fortune with crops. Before dawn, settlers (Puritans, not Pilgrims) arrived in the Pequot Native village and violently clubbed, shot, and burned alive over 700 Native Women, Men, and Children. Governor John Winthrop in 1637 proclaimed thanks and gratitude for God’s murdering of the defenseless Pequot Tribe. From that day moving forward the slaughters continued and were typically ended with a “Thanksgiving Feast” for killing defenseless Natives.

This is where I felt my stomach drop when I was doing my research. I realized how ignorant I had been to just blindly believe whatever they told me in school to be the truth. Not just about Thanksgiving either… this isn’t the first thing America’s incorrectly taught in school. I believed what the government wanted the education system to teach me, so I and all the other students around me, could move forward ignorantly and unknowingly. So I can one day fulfill my destiny as another cog in the machine for the man. (I’m being sarcastic if you can’t tell…)

They say that if you don’t learn from history it’s doomed to repeat itself. They forget to mention that if you don’t teach the truth in history, it’s doomed to repeat itself out of ignorance.

Remember when you go around the table this Thanksgiving and say what you’re thankful for… many people died from the very beginning. Be thankful for your life, oxygen, your freedoms, loved ones, trees, and NOT having to worry about some group of stupid-asses bust in your house and club you, shoot you, and burn you all to death prior to eating your meal & celebrating your death by giving thanks for a successful murder.

First let’s understand, what is a stroke?

  • When there is restricted blood flow to a particular part of the brain a stroke will be triggered. Tissue dies within the brain due to oxygen loss when blood flow is constrained.

No one is the same and there is also no entirely identical human response to a stroke or heart attack. The damage can vary from mild to severe and is potentially life threatening. When an individual suffers from a MILD stroke it is more likely that they will recover 100% versus someone that experiences a more severe case.

Moderate strokes will leave SOME permanent effects on that individual that can range from speech impediments, limb paralysis, and sometimes total paralysis. The good news is approximately 50 percent of stroke cases successfully reach partial to total recovery, and is why it’s the leading cause of disability in the U.S.

What can you expect when you have a stroke or someone close and near to you has one?

Medical science doesn’t have a cure for strokes. Holding yourself accountable for living a healthy lifestyle will reduce the likelihood of a stroke happening to you. But after a stroke has occurred you can expect some if not all of the following:

  • physical therapy to stop the muscles from weakening further
  • CT scans to observe brain activity and rule out tumors and other possible causes of a stroke
  • A carotid arteriogram which is a specialized x-ray for observing arteries

What Can the Caregiver Do to Improve the Stroke Survivor’s Quality of Life?

 Encourage the stroke survivor to attempt to do things independently, but remember to keep expectations realistic. Yes, it will take them more time to make a sand which than it used to, it will be quite a bit harder for them to get dressed, some days will be harder for them than others, and so on.
 Try to keep things as structured as possible; same meal times, same day of the week for certain errands, sleep schedules, and so on.
 Observe for signs of depression and be a source of encouragement. Praise them when they got through a task that’s hard for them, tell them to keep holding on to hope, and be a patient listening ear when they need to express something. Depression has been shown to debilitate the stroke survivor quicker and make getting through the day very difficult. Some vocal positive reinforcement can go a long way.
 You can work together on some basic sign language skills to help when communicating is difficult.
 Set the stroke survivor up with an acupuncture appointment to see what work can be done to help reduce pain, and improve nerve & muscle function.

How does a man know when they possibly have prostate disease?

Symptoms: When the prostate begins to malfunction, you will most likely experience one or more of the following:
